Innovative Pyrolysis-Based Plastic Waste Management System
Understanding the Problem
Global plastic production has increased from 234 million tonnes in 2000 to 460 million tonnes in 2019, yet only 9% of plastic waste is recycled. Centralized waste management systems face challenges of high CAPEX and OPEX, along with inefficient collection, segregation, and transportation processes that strain civic bodies.
As a result, up to 22 million tonnes of plastic leak annually into air, water, and soil, posing serious environmental and health risks—particularly for vulnerable populations such as waste pickers.
The Innovation
Our pioneering pyrolysis-based plastic waste management system redefines traditional waste management paradigms by delivering a sustainable, decentralized, and environmentally responsible solution.
Unlike conventional waste-to-energy or waste-to-chemical approaches, this system addresses critical challenges in plastic waste management while ensuring resource efficiency and circularity.
Key Components
Input Materials
The system utilizes diverse plastic waste streams, including PET, PP, HDPE, LDPE, and MLP, combined with a proprietary catalyst and controlled heat to enable efficient waste conversion.
Pyrolysis Process
At the core of the solution, plastic waste undergoes controlled thermo-catalytic depolymerisation (pyrolysis) using a proprietary catalyst at optimized temperatures.
This process generates a high-calorific-value gas that serves as an internal clean energy source, sustaining the pyrolysis cycle and minimizing external energy requirements. Additionally, the process significantly reduces plastic waste mass and volume while producing a bio-solid residue suitable for use as fuel.
